Frances Reed Elliot (1892–1965) was the first African American woman accepted into the American Red Cross Nursing Service. She earned this recognition on July 2, 1918.〔http://www.redcross.org/museum/pdfs/100dates.pdf〕 ==Early life== Elliot was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her mother was a plantation heiress and her father was a Cherokee and African American farm worker. When she was five, Elliot's mother died; shortly thereafter, her father left the area. She spent her early life in foster homes.
